Benefits of Sexual
Reproduction?
How could this lead to
Evolution?
Genetic Dominance
 Every
organism who reproduces sexually
receives genetic material from both partners.
 In
order to demonstrate a dominant trait, an
organism only requires 1 dominant allele (part
of a gene)
 In
order to demonstrate a recessive trait, an
organism must have 2 recessive alleles
 Homozygous
= 2 of the same types of alleles
(dominant or recessive)
 Heterozygous = 2 different alleles (1
dominant 1 recessive)
 Choose any letter to represent the same
allele, then use CAPITAL or lower case to
determine dominance
Punnett Squares
 Simple
graphical and mathematical analysis of the
potential genetic combinations that could occur in
offspring

Dominant alleles are represented with CAPITAL LETTERS
 Recessive

alleles are represented with lower case letters
For science 20 we will put the mother across the top and the dad vertically along
the side of the punnett square
Example
Determine
the % probability
that a mother with blue eyes
and a father with
heterozygous brown eyes
have a blue eyed child
