Key Terms:
Feudalism-A social system in which vassals were protected and maintained by
their lords usually through the granting of fiefs, and were required to serve them
in war.
Serf-A person in condition of servitude, required to render services to the lord.
Nomad-A member of a people or tribe that has no permanent home but moves
about from place to place.
People you need to know and what they did
Christopher Columbus- Sailed for the ocean blue b1492. He tried to find route
to the east by going west, attempted 4 times. He found the Bahamas. And he
sailed for Spain. Portugal denied him two times.
Ralph Lane- Establishes first colony on Roanoke Island. Was the ships captain.
Leader of the colony. Initially friendly with the Croatan Indians. Stayed back with
the colonists, colony was lost.
John White- He left Roanoke Island to go back to England to get supplies. Came
back 3 yrs later and couldn’t find the colonists behind. Went back to England 20
yrs later came back to look for lost colony. Map maker.
John Smith- Leader of Jamestown colony. Made friends with the Powhatan
Indians that helped them. He returned to England then things went bad in the
colony. Fighting and starvation. When the following Spring arrived, There were
only 60 settlers left.
Things to know!
 Pre contact culture groups- Paleo-Indian, archaic, woodland, and
Mississippian Indians. Know them in order!



Paleo-Indian- Crossed the land bridge from the baring straight. Means very
old. Nomadic hunters. Used chipped stones or knives and spears.
Archaic Indians- They developed the atlatl, a short stick used to throw a
spear, to use in the hunt. Game traps in a V shape were developed to capture
small game.
Woodland Indians- They built permanent villages; their houses were wound
with grass routes, and grew corn and squash. The bow and arrow was invented
for hunting: Deer was their primary game. Used Clay pottery.

Mississippian Indians- Developed about 700 AD along the Mississippi river
and extended into the Mountains and piedmont Of NC by 1300. Built
ceremonial centers. Large earthen Pyramids topped by a building. Fence to
keep out enemies.

Southern- Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and
Maryland.
Middle- New York pensylvania, New jersey
Colonial Lifestyles
Plantations were in the south
Most slaves were in the south
Most Peoples lived and revolved around Religion.
Colonial religions Differences
Life in the south revolved around agriculture and plantations with
slaves
Middle colonies had the most diverse population.
Dutch West India Company sent families over from the Netherlands,
Germany, Sweden, and Finland to the Middle colonies.
Quaker religion was big in the Middle colonies.
Life during the Middle Ages
Your life depended on what class you were born into
Serfs and peasants were at the bottom.
Lords and serfs were at the top.
Reasons for European Exploration
To find a western route to the east
To reach the orient
To find new land

Columbian Exchange
As the Explorers were exploring they traveled over to America
bringing things from their homeland
Some of these things included diseases that people in the new world
weren’t ammune to.
They also took things back from America to England.
They took the three sisters (corn. Beans and Squash.)
