Enzymes
Introduction
- Enzymes are proteins
- Enzymes speed up the rate of chemical reactions
- All enzymes end in –ASE
- Example: amylASE is an enzyme
Energy Hill Diagram
Definitions
Substrate = material on which an enzyme acts
Active Site = point at which a chemical reaction occurs between an
enzyme and substrate
Activation Energy = energy needed to get a reaction started
- Enzymes LOWER the amount of energy needed for a chemical
Reaction
Inhibitor = molecule that binds to an enzyme and decreases its activity
