G20 leaders told business should work with global unions
Discrimination cause of pay gap between men and women
_______________________________________________
This is a RadioLabour news update recorded on Wednesday July 13, 2016. I'm
Marc Belanger.
The business world needs to end its obsession with short-term gains designed to
impress shareholders and start working with the labour movement to build the
common good. That is one of the messages being passed on by labour leaders
to the G20 labour and employment ministers meeting in Beijing this week. The
G20 is a collection of the world’s largest economies. Its labour and employment
ministers are meeting ahead of a meeting of top leaders scheduled for
September. Philip Jennings is the General-Secretary of UNI – the global union
for skills and services. UNI represents some 900 trade unions with more than 20
million workers.

A UN agency has released a report showing that despite trends such as more
women graduating from higher education the pay gap between men and women
remains stubbornly high due to discrimination. The agency is the International
Labour Organization. The ILO focuses on matters of work in the world. Its chief
task is to recommend minimum standards of employment in pieces of proposed
legislation called Conventions. Pete Foster of ILO radio reports.
