Ear Wax (Cerumen) Ear wax is not dirt. Wax protects the ear canal from injury, infection, and foreign bodies. As you chew, your jaw muscles work the ear canal so that it naturally ejects small amounts over time. Probing the ear canal with a cotton swab could push earwax toward the eardrum and impair hearing. Instead, use a wet washcloth to wipe away any wax that appears at the ear opening. Let your physician decide whether a more aggressive cleaning is necessary.
