Describe a main conflict in the text you have studied AND analyse how the
conflict helped the author present important ideas.
In the play Macbeth underline the title by William Shakespeare the conflict of Macbeth
with himself helped to show the idea of change. The author presented this idea through
the use of soliloquies. This conflicted within Macbeth was shown through the use of
soliloquies. The idea of change was vital in the play as it leads to the main theme of the
play, appearance vs.do not use abbreviations reality.
In the beginning of the play we saw Macbeth as a brave soldier; an outstanding hero.
“For brave Macbeth who well deserves that name...” This quote shows Macbeths
appearance in the beginning of the play. When he finds out he is going to be the next
king of Scotland his ambition overpowers the good in him. Through his soliloquy we see
the change in his character “Let not light see my black and deep desires.” At this point
we start to see the conflict Macbeth has within himself and we see that this conflict.
Lady Macbeths fires Macbeth’s ambition to become the next King of Scotland by telling
him to kill King Duncan. The soliloquy of Macbeth just before he decides to kill Duncan
shows that he is struggling to fight his conscience. “I am his kinsman and his subject…”
Macbeth says he should protect King Duncan which shows the good side of him but at
the same time he says that the only thing motivating him is ambition. To prick the sides
of my intent, but only vaulting ambition,” This soliloquy of Macbeth clearly shows the
battle of Macbeths good and bad side. This conflict shows the good ambitious Macbeth
turn into a power hungry tyrant. This soliloquy helps the author present the idea of
change through the conflict of Macbeths good and bad side.
A good start but you need to offer at least three main body paragraphs for a level 2
essay. I am not sure you have made your task easy by limiting yourself to Macbeth’s
soliloquies. Why not sure other parts of the play to demonstrate Macbeth’s inner
conflict?
