Signs and Symptoms of HIV Disease
HIV (HUMAN IMMUMODIFICIENCY VIRUS)
Three stages:
(All test positive)
ASYMPTOMATIC STAGE
No physically apparent symptoms
HAZARDS: unknowing infection to others
Activation of condition through vaccines
SYMPTOMATIC STAGE
Some symptoms, less severe than the classic AIDS
e.g., loss of appetite
fever
weight loss
night sweats
skin rashes
tiredness
diarrhea
lack of resistance to infection
swollen lymph nodes
HAZARDS: These symptoms may indicate other serious diseases.
AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome)
Body’s immune (defense) system is impaired (T4 cell count falls below 200)
Otherwise controllable infections invade the body and cause additional diseases
and may eventually cause death.
Symptoms – Same as Symptomatic Stage (above)
Plus symptoms of the “opportunistic infections”
eg., Pneumatics Carina pneumonia - a persistent cough and fever
with shortness of breath and difficulty breathing.
Or symptoms of AIDS-related cancers
eg., Kaposi’s sarcoma, a form of cancer with multiple purplish
blotches and bumps on skin.
Or dementia (brain damage)
NOTE:
As is the case with all infectious diseases, the reactions of individuals to the AIDS virus
may differ.
