training you must undergo appreciation courses in the other trades. The following
tasks form part of a mechanical fitter’s job description.
Tasks
1 You need to write a report for each of the named processes below. The reports must
also include diagrams to aid in the description of how the process works, and what are
the advantages and limitations of each process.
TURNING - centre lathe, capstan eg turret, automatic
MILLING - up-cut, down cut eg horizontal, vertical, universal
DRILLING – Pillar and Bench drill
This will cover the marking criteria P1.
2 You need to draw and describe the different holding devices used on the 3 machines
named in P1, this will include, the 3 and 4 jaw chuck (97) used on the lathe, the heavy
machine vice (83) used on the milling machine and the hand vice (83) used with the
pillar drill.
This will cover the marking criteria P2.
3 You will need to draw and describe the different cutting tools used on the 3
machines named in P1. This includes the lathe cutting tools (98), the cutters (103)
used for horizontal/vertical milling and the twist drill bits(90) used on the pillar drill.
This will cover the marking criteria P3.
